The Ryan Murphy-produced procedurals are the network’s two highest-rated scripted series this season.

Fox has made its first two drama renewals for the 2020-21 season, picking up 911 and spinoff 911: Lone Star for new seasons.

The two procedurals, created by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Tim Minear, are Fox’s top-rated scripted shows of the season, with 911 ranking in the top 10 on all of broadcast TV in the key ad-sales demographic of adults 18-49. 911: Lone Star, meanwhile, had a big post-NFL premiere in January and posted steady numbers in its regular home on Monday nights.

The 2020-21 season will be the fourth for 911 and the second for 911: Lone Star.

911 and 911: Lone Star are truly two of the strongest and most thrilling dramas on broadcast television, as well as being centerpieces for Fox Entertainment,” Fox Entertainment president Michael Thorn said Monday in a statement. “Creators Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Tim Minear, as well as their incredible teams of writers, directors, casts and entire crews, make jaw-dropping, edge-of-your-seat magic in every episode. From Los Angeles earthquakes and tsunamis to Texas-sized tornados and bucking broncos, both shows deliver incredible spectacle with strong, identifiable characters you care about week to week. We eagerly look forward to many more thrilling rescues in both series, which help honor this country’s brave first responders, as well as those around the world.”

With a week of delayed viewing, 911 is averaging 10.48 million viewers and a 2.4 rating among adults 18-49, while 911: Lone Staraveraged about 9.1 million viewers and a 1.8 in the demo. Fox says that with multiplatform viewing added in, 911 rises to 16 million viewers — tops on the network this season — while 911: Lone Star draws 12.3 million multiplatform viewers.

The two shows join the long-running animated series The Simpsons and Family Guy and the freshman animated shows Bless the Harts and Duncanville on Fox’s roster for 2020-21. The network also has long-term deals in place with the NFL for Thursday Night Football in the fall (or whenever the NFL season begins) and with the WWE for Smackdown.

Minear is showrunner on both 911 and 911: Lone Star, which hail from Disney’s 20th Century Fox TV, and executive produces both with Murphy and Falchuk.

Other exec producers on 911 are Alexis Martin Woodall, Bradley Buecker, John J. Gray, Kristen Reidel and stars Angela Bassett and Peter Krause. On 911: Lone Star, Woodall, Buecker, Gray, Bassett and Rashad Raisani are EPs, and lead actor Rob Lowe is a co-exec producer.

Tomorrow, an all new episode of 9-1-1 premieres and it will be an emotional episode for Maddie. I’ve finally added screen-captures from the last episode. These have been delayed because I have been working on launching my Arielle Kebbel site. Enjoy the captures.

The 118 responds to accidents at a bowling alley and a home renovation; Bobby and Michael take Harry camping; Chimney and Maddie rush into action when their romantic dinner date takes a wild-turn.

In an interview with TVLine, Bob Greenblatt, the NBC chairman at the time, was candid about recruiting Jennifer Love Hewitt for the show. Greenblatt clarified the rumor that Hewitt would replace Hargitay and that she would be working alongside her and Meloni. The interview came at a time where the show could have been looking toward a future without its original two leads and Meloni would go on to leave the show a few months after Greenblatt’s comments were made.

NBC’s chairman was candid about Jennifer Love-Hewitt being recruited

When asked if there was life for the show beyond Hargitay and Meloni, Greenblatt said, “I do believe that. Although, to clarify, this isn’t to replace Mariska. The idea is that we want to bring in somebody midway through the season alongside Mariska and Chris. Mariska’s deal is closed for [a 13th] season, so she’s not disappearing.”

He continued, “Creatively, I think it will give [Benson] some competition, which I think will be interesting. And then we have to look at what a 14th season might require. Mariska just adopted a child. We don’t know yet if she wants to do the show for a season 14, and we’re looking at options. Jennifer Love is somebody who we’ve been circling, but I don’t know that that is going to happen at all.”

TVLine clarified by “replacement” they meant that the Hewitt character would be replacing Benson’s role as the character would move up in the ranks if Stabler and Meloni left. With that amendment, Greenblatt went on to explain, “That creatively is the thinking. New showrunner Warren Leight is in the process of figuring all of that out. We’re trying to change it up and see if some new configurations could keet the show going for several more years.”

The actress guest-starred on the show before

If Hewitt did end up on the show, there would have been some retconning since she appeared on the show once before.

In one of the most memorable episodes of the series, Hewitt guest-starred in the 2010 episode “Behave.” She portrayed a rape victim who is repeatedly attacked by her attacker for many years before she is able to take him head-on, with help from Benson.

The episode was also memorable due to the fact that it featured the first character on the show from Law & Order: LA. Skeet Ulrich, who starred in the spinoff as Detective Rex Winters, appeared as a Los Angeles detective who had worked on Hewitt’s character’s case when she lived there. Law & Order: LA premiered right after this episode debuted. The next year, another character from the spinoff appeared in the form of Deputy District Attorney Jonah Dekker, portrayed by Terrence Howard.

Law & Order: Special Victims Unit airs Thursdays on NBC. The untitled Elliot Stabler spinoff series should be on air by 2021. Jennifer Love Hewitt currently stars in Fox’s 9-1-1.
